A few words from Drew Valen
The Last Promise grew out of watching my own family navigate loss, aging, caregiving, old wounds, and the complicated promises we make to the people we love.
Over the years, I’ve seen families pulled together by hardship and torn apart by it. I’ve watched people step up when they didn’t think they could, and I’ve seen how grief, money, guilt, loyalty, and responsibility can change the way people see each other.
This story isn’t based on any one person or event, but it was inspired by the struggles, sacrifices, and resilience I’ve witnessed throughout my own family. At its heart, The Last Promise is about keeping your word when doing so becomes harder than you ever imagined.
No matter how dark things become, I’ve always believed there is a way forward. Sometimes it isn’t easy to see. Sometimes it comes at a cost. But hope has a way of surviving even in the places where it seems lost.

When her mother, Katherine, asks her to care for Auntie Lola and protect her from her family, Karla says yes because there is no other answer.
